What is 'distance learning?'

30% of American Universities in 2005 offered a 'distance learning' program (citation needed). These programs offer full internet (better word?) classes, traditional classes that have an electronic component involved, and full traditional classes. The on-line classes in 'distance learning' programs do not meet at all, sometimes, and meet during the night and on weekends ("virtual meeting" of on-line classes) other times.

Research Question: How are student retention, motivation, and outcomes affected by technology? What is the relative 'value' of a 'distance learning' program degree?
